President Moon Jae-in will meet online with dozens of representatives of political and business communities, as well as some members of the public to exchange seasonal greetings and share hopes for the new year.
According to the presidential office on Wednesday, the New Year greeting event will be held on Thursday. Complying with social distancing rules amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual event will be held in a virtual format this year and involve around 50 participants, one fourth of such meetings in previous years.
The invited guests include Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug, Supreme Court Chief Justice Kim Myeong-su, Constitutional Court President Yoo Nam-seok and National Election Commission Chairperson Noh Jeong-hee.
Chairs of the ruling Democratic and main opposition People Power Parties will also attend the virtual event, along with leaders of large and small companies and eight citizens recognized for their recent contribution to society in various fields.
During the session, Moon is expected to thank the public for helping the government’s efforts to contain the pandemic and express his will to turn South Korea into a leading nation.
